In her new book “The Genesis Machine,” futurist and founder of the Future Today Institute Amy Webb warns that terrorists could create synthesized viruses in a lab and use them for nefarious purposes.

Scientists have managed to replicate potentially harmful viruses like the poliovirus and smallpox before. It’s a contentious issue: some say the work could lead to scientific breakthroughs, but to others it amounts to government-funded saber-rattling.

In an excerpt from the book published this week by The Atlantic, Webb points out that in 2011, Erasmus Medical Center virologist Ron Fouchier was able to change the DNA of the H5N1 bird flu virus to make it transmissible from bird to humans and from human to human.

Fouchier’s research was funded by the US government, according to Webb, but due to the sheer risks involved, the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity asked academic journals to redact portions of Fouchier’s paper to ensure details didn’t end up in the wrong hands.

Rogue Rocket Headed to the Moon Might be China’s, Not SpaceX

The NY Times and other MSM reported that a SpaceX Rocket was going to crash into the moon, but, it turns out the rocket is not a SpaceX rocket, it belongs to the Chinese.

China Not SpaceX May Be Source of Rocket Crashing Into Moon

On March 4, a human-made piece of rocket detritus will slam into the moon.

But it turns out that it is not, as was previously stated in a number of reports, including by The New York Times, Elon Musk’s SpaceX that will be responsible for making a crater on the lunar surface.

Instead, the cause is likely to be a piece of a rocket launched by China’s space agency.

Last month, Bill Gray, developer of Project Pluto, a suite of astronomical software used to calculate the orbits of asteroids and comets, announced that the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket was on a trajectory that would intersect with the path of the moon. The rocket had launched the Deep Space Climate Observatory, or DSCOVR, for the National Oceanic and the Atmospheric Administration on Feb. 11, 2015.

Mr. Gray had been tracking this rocket part for years, and in early January, it passed within 6,000 miles of the surface of the moon, and the moon’s gravity swung it around on a path that looked like it might crash…

If you can organize graphene in three dimensions, you can greatly expand the amount of hydrogen you can store in graphene.  This could greatly reduce the cost of hydrogen storage, and even allow for bulk room-temperature storage.  Researchers out of the Istituto Nanoscienze, a research consortium, published results from an experiment that demonstrates organizing graphene in three dimensions is possible.

3D arrangement of graphene enables storage of larger quantities of hydrogen

A research consortium has discovered how to organize graphene in three dimensions. This novel process could be used to store larger quantities of hydrogen and develop more sensitive gas sensors….

He found the relevant expertise at the Institute for Sensor and Actuator Systems at the Technical University of Vienna, Austria. Here, Professor Ulrich Schmid‘s group has been researching processes for years that make it possible to integrate extremely fine, porous structures into dense materials in a controlled manner….

Dr. Stefano Veronesi, a member of Dr. Heun’s research group at the Istituto Nanoscienze, explains what the application of this process means in terms of hydrogen storage: “Graphene can bind (store) molecular as well as elemental hydrogen on the surface. At room temperature, however, only elemental hydrogen binds well to graphene. Molecular hydrogen, on the other hand, forms only a very weak bond with the graphene surface. By selective functionalization (“grafting”) of the graphene surface, the ‘storage’ capability of the graphene surface can be significantly increased even at room temperature. How much hydrogen can be stored is determined by the graphene surface area present – the more graphene, the more hydrogen can be stored.”

Thanks to graphene, our ability to think and see that thought become a machine’s action is just a few short years away.  Researchers out of the University of Technology Sydney have been developing a new type of EEG sensor using graphene that could break down the hurdles that have prevented engineers from fully developed thought to machine action technology up to this time.

Graphene biosensor will drive new innovations in brain-controlled robotics – Physics World

Recently, researchers have developed EEG sensors made from graphene, which offers excellent conductivity and biocompatibility. Graphene-based biosensors, however, often have low durability, corroding upon contact with sweat, and exhibit high skin-contact impedance that hampers the detection of signals from the brain. A novel graphene-based biosensor developed at the University of Technology Sydney aims to overcome these limitations, detecting EEG signals with high sensitivity and reliability – even in highly saline environments.

The sensor, described in the Journal of Neural Engineering, is made from epitaxial graphene (EG) grown on a silicon carbide (SiC)-on-silicon substrate. This structure unites graphene’s favourable properties with the physical robustness and chemical inertness of SiC.

“We’ve been able to combine the best of graphene, which is very biocompatible, very conductive, with the best of silicon technology, which makes our biosensor very resilient and robust to use,” says senior author Francesca Iacopi in a press statement.

….“With our sensor, the contact resistance improves when the sensor sits on the skin,” Iacopi explains. “Over time, we were able to achieve a reduction of more than 75% of the initial contact resistance. This means the electric signals being sent by the brain can be reliably collected and then significantly amplified, and that the sensors can also be used reliably in harsh conditions, thereby enhancing their potential for use in brain–machine interfaces.”

Gene Variant May Have Helped Ancient Humans Survive Starvation

About a million years ago a small mutation might have unlocked a big advantage for ancient humans. A recent study in Science Advances suggests that a variant of a critical stretch of DNA called the growth hormone receptor gene protected against starvation—in part by limiting individuals’ body size during periods of resource scarcity. The variant was widespread among Homo sapiens and their relatives, although it suddenly plummeted in frequency beginning around 40,000 years ago, especially in East Asia and Eurasia. Many people still carry it today.

Previous research had linked the variant, called GHRd3, to characteristics such as smaller birth size and earlier sexual maturity, as well as other qualities that can benefit organisms when food is scarce, says the study’s lead author Omer Gokcumen, an anthropologist at the University at Buffalo. Still, researchers wanted to know more precisely what role the mutation played in human evolution.

To dig deeper, Gokcumen and his…

Scientists believe they may have found the basic proteins that might have led to the creation of life, if you believe the spontaneous life theory as opposed to some form of design theory.

Scientists discovered proteins that could responsible for the origins of life

How did life appear on our planet?

A new study by the Rutgers scientists addressed these most profoundly unanswered questions in biology. Scientists have discovered the structures of proteins that could be leading players in the origins of life in the primordial soup of ancient Earth.

They determined the properties that defined life and concluded that anything alive needed to collect and use energy from sources such as the Sun or hydrothermal vents.

As proteins carry out most biological activities, scientists hence decided to explore the combination of the two- that is, proteins that bind metals.

The study’s lead author Yana Bromberg, a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Microbiology at Rutgers University-New Brunswick, said, “We compared all existing protein structures that bind metals to establish any common features, based on the premise that these shared features were present in ancestral proteins and were diversified and passed down to create the range of…

A new study has revealed that cells which appear to be going through Pyroptosis, cell death, has the power to reverse the process and continue on living.  The revelation is helping scientists understand the nature of cell death, hoping to use this knowledge, in part, to effectively trigger cancer cell death in targeted ways.

Cells can die in many ways, but one fate is particularly grisly. Pyroptosis occurs when a cell dies by detonating, typically in response to an infection. In a fiery swan song, a pyroptotic cell sacrifices itself to flood surviving compatriots with its last supply of danger-signaling chemicals called cytokines. The cell’s death is quick and messy, but it’s for the greater good.

“It happens quite abruptly,” says Gary Mo, a bioengineer at the University of Illinois, Chicago. “The cells will literally pop.”

Scientists had previously thought that pyroptosis is a one-way street—once set in motion, the decision can’t be reversed. In a recent study published in the journal Nature Communications, Mo and his team found that a cell has an inbuilt mechanism to revoke pyroptosis, allowing it to die another day. The insights from the discoveries could clue researchers in on how pyroptosis can be regulated, be it to kill off cancer cells in a patient, or to…

China builds ‘artificial moon’ for gravity experiment

Chinese scientists have built an “artificial moon” research facility that will enable them to simulate low-gravity environments using magnetism.

The facility, slated for official launch this year, will use powerful magnetic fields inside a 2-foot-diameter (60 centimeters) vacuum chamber to make gravity “disappear.” The scientists were inspired by an earlier experiment that used magnets to levitate a frog.

Li Ruilin, a geotechnical engineer at the China University of Mining and Technology, told the South China Morning Post that the chamber, which will be filled with rocks and dust to imitate the lunar surface, is the “first of its kind in the world” and that it could maintain such low-gravity conditions for “as long as you want.”

Scientists plan to use the facility to test technology in prolonged low-gravity environments before it is sent to the moon, where gravity is just one-sixth of its strength on Earth. This will allow them to iron out any costly technical kinks, as well as test whether certain structures will survive on the moon’s surface and assess the viability of a human settlement there.

“Some experiments, such as an impact test, need just a few seconds [in the simulator],” Li said. “But others, such as creep testing, can take several days.” A creep test measures how much a material will deform under a constant temperature and stress.

Researchers studying the causes and process of developing age-related health issues developed a vaccine to eliminate cells in the human body that are believed to trigger arterial sclerosis and other diseases.

The team led by a professor from Juntendo University in Tokyo said the effects of the vaccine were confirmed through experiments using mice.

“Most disorders that elderly patients tend to develop can be targeted (by the vaccine),” said Toru Minamino, a professor of cardiovascular internal medicine at the university’s graduate school.

There are concerns that prehistoric monster Megalodon is back after huge bite marks were pictured on the side of a great white shark.

Diver Jalil Najafov, 40, saw the 15ft shark with the massive bite mark swimming off Isla Guadalupe in Mexico – and the huge wound has since sparked a debate as to what on earth attacked it.

Experts argued why another shark would have bitten its own kind so violently, while social media users had another much more terrifying idea, reports the Daily Star.

Jalil’s Instagram post has led to speculation it could have come from a Megalodon, an ancient shark species regarded as one of the largest and most powerful predators to have ever lived.
