Thanks to a new breakthrough from a team working out of Technical University of Munich, the blind might now see, at least in infrared.

New Device Lets People Who Are Blind “See” in Infrared

Watch out, Matt Murdock — there may be a new Daredevil in Hell’s Kitchen soon enough! While Murdock’s superhero character relies on super hearing, taste and electrical impulses to see because he is blind, IRL folks with low vision may soon have access to a new pair of goggles that uses infrared technology to assist in navigating the world around them.

Manuel Zahn and Armaghan Ahmad Khan at the Technical University of Munich in Germany published yet-to-be peer-reviewed new research on their 3D camera and haptic feedback armband.

“Even in the present era, visually impaired people face a constant challenge of navigation,” the pair wrote in their study. “The most common tool available to them is the cane. Although the cane allows good detection of objects in the user’s immediate vicinity, it lacks the ability to detect obstacles further away.”

Zahn’s design uses a pair of infrared cameras inserted in 3D-printed prototype goggles to capture a stereoscopic image that a small computer uses to create a map of the surrounding area. Because it uses infrared, the goggles work even in the dark. The setup’s armband uses 25 actuators in a grid that vibrate to help users understand how close objects are, as well as how they’re oriented. If a user walks towards an obstacle, the vibration intensity of the respective actuators gradually increases.

It looks like the Chinese state’s efforts to counter the decades-long one-child policy has not paid off, as China looks to start losing its population within the next few years.

Data Shows That China’s Population Is About to Start Actively Shrinking

That’s actually not a good thing.

Big Shrink

China’s population may soon level off and then actively shrink as families have fewer babies and older residents age out of having children, according to new data published this week.

Annual figures show 10.62 million babies were born last year, down a staggering 11.5 percent from 12 million in 2020, the South China Morning Post reports — a troubling development that could end up hurting the country’s economy significantly in the long run and even slow its seemingly inexorable march toward global dominance.

Bad News

Many experts agree the change won’t happen overnight.

“In the next 10 to 20 years, China’s natural population growth will not continue falling, it will fluctuate around zero and could see small drops, but there will not be rapid decreases,” Chen Wei, a professor with the Population Development Studies Centre at Renmin University, told SCMP.

While experts may disagree on exactly how much the country’s population of 1.4 billion people will shrink — with some even arguing that its population could drop by half within 30 years — it’s pretty clear there are a few main causes behind the trend. For one, China didn’t ease enforcement of its one-child policy until 2013, and only raised the limit to two children per household in 2016.

It was too little too late, though, because younger families are now having a hard time making ends meet, and older families have aged out of their childbearing years.

The shrink presents a problem for China’s government and economy. According to the The New York Times, a declining population could create a burden on China’s labor force and younger workers. Because older workers may not be able to hold jobs, the government may struggle to pay for an older population that is living longer.

It might be tempting to think that slow declines in the growth of a population is a good thing given humanity’s massive carbon footprint. But there’s a real human cost to…

Meta Creating Multi-Tasking AI

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta is looking to expand their AI powers by creating AI capable of multi-tasking.

Meta’s new learning algorithm can teach AI to multi-task

From technologyreview.com

A team at Meta AI (previously Facebook AI Research) wants to change that. The researchers have developed a single algorithm that can be used to train a neural network to recognize images, text, or speech. The algorithm, called Data2vec, not only unifies the learning process but performs at least as well as existing techniques in all three skills. “We hope it will change the way people think about doing this type of work,” says Michael Auli, a researcher at Meta AI.

The research builds on an approach known as self-supervised learning, in which neural networks learn to spot patterns in data sets by themselves, without being guided by labeled examples. This is how large language models like GPT-3 learn from vast bodies of unlabeled text scraped from the internet, and it has driven many of the recent advances in deep learning.

A Californian Bill heading to become law in the one-party state will now force grocery stores to “donate” their ‘edible food wastes” to charities in a move that is sure to produce chaotic ‘unintended’ circumstances as grocery stores figure out ways to minimize their liabilities now created by this to-be law.

New California Law Requires Grocery Stores To Donate All Edible Food Waste

California has enforced a new law to mark the New Year that can make massive strides in fighting food waste in the United States. In fact, if it is effective enough, it might forever change the way the region tackles the issue of food waste.

Before the pandemic caused by the coronavirus, about 35 Million United States citizens faced food insecurity. Unfortunately, this number has gradually risen over the past few years, instead of dropping.

The Senate Bill 1383

One of the issues that the new California Law will tackle, known as the Senate Bill 1383, is the issue of food insecurity. It states that all food suppliers, including grocery stores, must donate all food waste that is still edible to a food bank or an organization that rescues food.

An American University taking taxpayer dollars has just ruled that a free speech group cannot be formed because free speech space is far too dangerous to allow anyone to just wander into without ‘protections’ from potentially ‘offensive’ thoughts and ideas.

Emory student free speech group rejected to prevent ‘harm’

‘The rejection of the Emory Free Speech Forum exemplifies the exact reason why this club must exist’

Students at Emory University School of Law seeking to start a free speech group were rejected by the Student Bar Association, which argued in its denial letter there are “no apparent safeguards in place to prevent potential and real harm that could result” from the group’s various discussions.

The Student Bar Association, in rejecting the request from the Emory Free Speech Forum for official recognition, also said the group was too similar to other campus groups to approve.

The rejection letter was recently published by the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education, which is lobbying on behalf of the Emory Free Speech Forum to get the decision overturned. FIRE argues the decision violates the private university’s free-expression policy.

On Jan. 10, FIRE publicly called on Emory Law to approve the forum’s application, which…

Reparations Killer Caught, Charged After Burger King Attack

A black militant decided to murder a white teen girl for not being able to open a cash drawer to give him money for reparations.  The potentially DNC-inspired terrorist murdered the young woman without warrant, possibly inspired by the CRT teachings that white people aren’t fully human.  The man appears to have severe mental issues, which is just the type of person DNC-CRT rhetoric is designed to ‘inspire.’

The suspect accused of brutally gunning down a Burger King cashier in Harlem last week is demanding reparations for slavery.

What is the background?

Winston Glynn is accused of murdering 19-year-old Kristal Bayron-Nieves, an employee at a Burger King restaurant in East Harlem.

Police say Glynn stormed into the fast food eatery early on Jan. 9, attacking the manager and another customer. Glynn allegedly stole $100 from a cash register, but demanded that Bayron-Nieves hand over more cash. Unfortunately, the she did not have the key to open the cash drawer. Police say the young women begged for her life, but accuse Glynn of firing one shot and killing Bayron-Nieves.

“We often hear the term a senseless murder,” NYPD Chief of Department Kenneth Corey said. “That is not a cliché in this case. There was no reason to shoot this young woman. Money had been handed over. She was trying to comply with the gunman’s demands. She was killed for no apparent reason.”

What happened…

Pennsylvania open Senate Seat could be the difference between a GOP-controlled Senate and a DNC-controlled Senate, pundits believe.

Pennsylvania Senate race could decide control of Congress in 2022

WASHINGTON, Penn. – If Democrats are going to hold the Senate, they must win the very few closely contested states up for grabs – particularly Pennsylvania, a politically divided state that includes volatile sections like this old industrial corner of the southwest.

Democrats in “western P-A.” fully believe they will decide the political fate of the Senate in a unique 2022 contest: the most populous state with a toss-up Senate race, and probably a close contest for an open seat in a state that President Joe Biden carried.

Immediately after being formally sworn in, Virginia’s new Republican governor, Glenn Youngkin, signed an executive order banning Critical Race Theory (CRT) in the state’s schools. Executive Order One, issued on January 15, 2022, carries the title,

“ENDING THE USE OF INHERENTLY DIVISIVE CONCEPTS, INCLUDING CRITICAL RACE THEORY, AND RESTORING EXCELLENCE IN K-12 PUBLIC EDUCATION IN THE COMMONWEALTH.”

Youngkin swept to a surprise victory over the heavily favored democratic nominee in November 2021, after a year of Virginia parents pushing back at school board meetings against CRT in their kids’ curriculum.

EO One reads, in part (emphasis added):

Political indoctrination has no place in our classrooms. The vast majority of learning in our schools involves imparting critical knowledge and skills in math, science,…

Researchers at MIT are employing machine learning techniques to better understand turbulent plasma phenomena in fusion devices. According to MIT News, a new deep learning framework was developed that leverages artificial neural networks to represent a reduced turbulence theory.

The research is described in two papers, published in Physical Review E and Physics of Plasmas.

If researchers hope to control fusion for energy production, they need a better understanding of the turbulent motion of ions and electrons in plasmas moving through fusion reactors. The field lines of toroidal structures known as tokamaks force the plasma particles; the intent is to confine them long enough to produce significant net energy gains, but…

Much to the chagrin of our resident despot Tony “I am the science” Fauci, the Supreme Court has struck down Biden’s vaccine mandate which would have used OSHA to force companies employing more than 100 people to force vaccinations on employees.

The mandate was met with strong opposition from private employers with some, like The Daily Wire, filing lawsuits almost immediately after it was announced.

The mandate was previously blocked by a lower court in response to another lawsuit filed on behalf of several states which argued the mandate was gross “unconstitutional overreach.” It would seem the SCOTUS has agreed.

In a 6-3 decision: “OSHA’s COVID–19 Vaccination and Testing; Emergency Temporary Standard, 86 Fed. Reg. 61402, is stayed pending disposition of the applicants’ petitions for review in the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit and disposition of the applicants’ petitions for writs of certiorari, if such writs are timely sought.
