Researchers in the University of Georgia have discovered the existence of a gene that could create widespread antimicrobial resistance, which would put humanity existentially at risk.

The gene has long been feared to exist, and now that they’ve discovered it occuring in nature, the concern has moved very much out of the theoretical and into the real.

The risk is considered in the top 10 of potential risks to human existance.

A gene that causes bacteria to be resistant to one of the world’s most important antibiotics, colistin, has been detected in sewer water in Georgia. The presence of the MCR-9 gene is a major concern for public health because it causes antimicrobial resistance, a problem that the World Health Organization has declared “one of the top 10 global public health threats facing humanity.”

Researchers from the University of Georgia’s Center for Food Safety (CFS) collected sewage water from an urban setting in Georgia to test for the MCR gene in naturally present bacteria. Led by College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences assistant professor Issmat Kassem, whose research focuses on MCR’s presence around the world, the team was surprised at how quickly they detected MCR—they found evidence of the gene in the first sample they took.

Kassem said that demonstrates that the gene is becoming established in the U.S.

The bacteria where the gene was found, Morganella morganii, added further concern for Kassem. This marked the first time that MCR was found in M. morganii, which is problematic because it is a bacteria not often tested by researchers. This means that the problem could be considerably more widespread than initially thought.

It seems appropriate that the late Senator Harry Reid (D-NV) should lie in state in the U.S. Capitol rotunda. He lied there many times before.

Senator Reid lied about his Senate colleague and co-religionist Mitt Romney on the Senate floor in 2012. I use the word “lied” advisedly, in the sense that he intentionally stated as true something he categorically knew to be false. And he did it to neutralize a credible Republican presidential nominee. Reid said “he heard” that Romney hadn’t paid any taxes in 10 years: Romney later released a return showing he’d paid $1.9 million in taxes in 2011. Pants on fire, Senator Reid: and it isn’t just me: Politifact outed the falsehood, but the damage was done, and Senate rules insulated Reid from any consequences.

And Reid was a mighty obstructionist. In 2001 he was instrumental in blocking President George W. Bush’s nomination of Miguel Estrada,, a Honduran immigrant with degrees from Columbia and Harvard, to the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit. (Tragically, Estrada’s wife was a casualty of that turmoil.) After some seasoning on the Circuit Court Estrada would have been an outstanding first Latino Supreme Court appointee. No dice, said the man from Vegas. And in 2006 Reid helped scuttle a bipartisan, comprehensive immigration reform bill. President George W. Bush helped craft legislation to increase border security, increase the number of guest workers, and expand green cards, a general overhaul of what is universally regarded as a broken immigration system. News flash: it’s still broken, and the prospects for reform grow ever more remote.

Why did Reid labor (successfully) to bring down Estrada and immigration reform? Same motivation in each case: the paramount desire to deny a Republican president “wins” that Reid wanted to reserve for a Democratic administration, the better to reap Blue electoral hay from Latino voters.

One hates to speak ill of the dead, and I’m not without some personal sympathy for the man: we’re both afflicted with bad eyesight. And I’m sure he well served his constituents, particularly those in a position to underwrite political campaigns. There’s a reason the crane is the State Bird of Nevada. I’m sure he will be mourned by family and friends. And I’m glad he funded research on space aliens, surely to the benefit of his fine constituents – who knows, maybe voters? — in Area 51. But let’s not kid ourselves. Harry Reid may have been a very skilled politician, but he was no statesman. Still, may he rest in peace.

For a number of reasons, there has been a great resignation occurring across America, as hundreds of thousands, even millions, of Americans choose to walk away from their jobs and find another way to make a living.
Two of the main reasons for this great resignation really have to do with the vaccine mandates and the codifying of our corporate world to match the anti-American neo-marxianesque illiterate ideology of CRT, critical race theory, which supports the notion that white people invented racism and liberty for reasons. It really is that unbelievably cartoonishly simplistic.
Many more Americans haven’t quit, they’ve been fired, for violating muh racisms and bigotries and being Americans and whatnot, and many have been fired for refusing to take the 459th jab, or whatever number these controllers are up to by now.
American leftists, sheep of billionaire DNC elites, believe they can cancel their way out of having to face people that don’t think like them, don’t act like them, and never want to be like them. We Americans can coexist with people we don’t like, ideas we think are insane, even racist, because we have a shared belief in rule of law, in a land with a bill of rights, our particular bill of rights, for each and every citizen, even leftists.
American leftists have no such ability, for their ideology is based on a premise that only until the world is entirely like them, one of us, one of us, one of us (real Freaks vibe here for sure), can they hope to see this perfect equity and perfect social justice thing they’ve been promising for over 50 years, having been in power for the last 20.

What is Emerging in China’s Military AI World?

China is scrambling to catch up to AI governance as it has already launched numerous military AI projects. The types of governance models that a Chinese Communist Party run office might develop might be more about assuring continued control of the AI by the elite party members, foremostly, control by Chairman Xi. Considerations of violations of rights to privacy, speech, etc. are not factored into the governance the Chinse Communist Party state will create.
The telegraphing of this need for AI governance by the Chinese State seems, at least to this analyst, to be more about attempting to pretend they are earnestly seeking to build an ethical, rule-of-law based governance model in harmony with the world around her than to share with the world they have a huge deficit in AI development (pressing x to doubt on that claim).
Everyone, I would surmise, to some degree, has major AI governance issues, but these issues are most likely more about agit prop, more about sneaking in a non-direct claim of China being a country you can build your AI dependence on. Trust us, we won’t spy on you or become digital saboteurs.

Sonia Sotomayor claimed in a vaccine mandate hearing that over 100,000 children were in the hospital because of Covid and “many are on ventilators.” The CDC confirmed that Sotomayor was, in fact, lying when she said 100,000 children were in the hospital because of COVID.
As of right now, there are only a few thousand total children that have actually had to go the hospital for Covid, and a few hundred that have been on ventilators.
The fact that a sitting justice can be so grossly uninformed about the matter she is adjudicating is frighting for Americans that still value the Rule of Law. Clearly, Sotomayor believes in a more emotional approach to adjudicating, where the factuality of semantics is overridden by your feelings that are far superior to the subhumans just outside your elite tribe of noble understanding and being.

In anticipation of our inevitable subjugation by a superior species I wish it to be known that I embrace the arrival of our robot overlords. I am pro-Bot, pro-Borg. Klaatu barada nikto, ya’all! It only needs saying once because I know they will remember forever. I’m your friend! And it’s only a matter of time before the takeover is complete. In fact, it may be all over now and we just don’t know it.

Because I know where they’re coming from, after a fashion. A couple of years ago I played a murderous robot in an adaptation of Karel Capek’s “Rossum’s Universal Robots” (R.U.R.) by Lee Eric Shackleford. Capek, a Czech writer, isn’t exactly a household name but he deserves to be, because he is to robots what Mary Shelley was to Frankenstein.

In 1920, when he wrote the play, Capek set the canon: like Ms. Shelley he draped our deepest fears in synthetic flesh. Made in our image? Check! Stronger and smarter than us? Check! Mistreated by us? Check! Vengeful, like us? Check and double-check! And ultimately the chickens come home to roost and there’s slaughter.

As Callida, the beret-wearing commander of the insurgent robot army, I turned my gun on Henry Domin (commendably played by Atlanta actor Fred Galyan): “We have labored in your laboratories for years. It is doubtful we have need of human scientists. And even if we did, you are not a scientist. You are only a salesman. A salesman who has no more customers to buy his product. You are no longer of value.” POW!

And so it ends for the human race – almost. I won’t spoil the show, but there’s at least a glimmer of salvation. And I let my robot pals saw my skull open to study my brain (offstage, thankfully).

Artificial Intelligence is waging a stealth war against the human race. If you don’t believe me just wait until the next time you drop your phone in the drink, or the computer crashes. We can be immobilized in a single tick of the atomic clock. Hackers provide regular reminders of our vulnerability but the robots will be much more efficient, and harder to stop.

Greg Nichols, writing in ZDNet quotes Pieter Abeel, a professor of robotics at UC-Berkeley and host of The Robot Brains podcast, saying that 2022 may be the inflection point where AI, machine learning, and machine vision finally come together:

“Popular coverage of robotics trends towards home-butler style robots and self-driving cars because they’re very relatable to our everyday lives. Meanwhile AI Robotics is taking off in areas of our world that are less visible but critical to our livelihoods – think e-commerce fulfillment centers and warehouses, farms, hospitals, recycling centers. All areas with a big impact on our lives, but not activities that the average person is seeing or directly interacting with on a daily basis.”

I don’t know about you but I’m getting ready. I say “thank you” to the navigation software in the car, to elevators, to Siri and Alexa and all the rest of them. Never cuss them out. I’ll dance with the guys at Boston Dynamics (especially the dog-one). I love you, robots!
