You Can End Inflation Mr. Biden, by Convening Bretton Woods II

by Ralph Benko

There is one, unconventional way to quell inflation without recession; it would save Joe Biden’s presidency. Conventional folk think the gold standard an anachronism.

Think different.

Inflation is putting Biden into desperate political peril. His popularity rating is lower than any modern president (except Trump) at the comparable time in his presidency.

Sending shockwaves through the political class, the Republicans dominate Democrats in the generic poll. I’m not an alarmist. But this scenario is, as it should be, alarming to Democrats.

It’s also alarming to me, a paleoconservative Republican. I, the “second most conservative man in the world” (per a Washington Post columnist), fear that a GOP political hegemony will degenerate into the Republicans’ default country-club Republican policies of mercantilist oligarchy in supply-side drag.

The reversion to Republican mean, ThurstonHowellIIIconomics, “freshen Lovey’s martini Gilligan, chop chop!” Pretty mean!

Mr. President? Go for the gold!

It’s curious. Yet political transformation often comes from the unexpected source.

Nixon’s anti-communist credentials from his congressional days persecuting Soviet gentleman-spy Alger Hiss immunized him to claims of softness on Communism.

Nixon to China!

Welcome to the “Twilight Zone” of politics where the right does the left thing, and the left does the right thing. And everybody grumble-cheers.

It goes both ways. From out of left field, wholesale deregulation was pioneered by President Jimmy Carter.

The big push for dropping the top income tax rate, attributed to Reagan, came from top Democrats: Rep. Dan Rostenkowski, D-Ill., and Speaker Tip O’Neill, D-Mass., dropping the top rate from 70% to 50% (Sen. Joe Biden, D-Del., voted aye).

Then, Sen. Bill Bradley, D-N.J., and Rep. Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., to 28% (Sen. Joe Biden voting aye). President Bill Clinton gave the capital gains tax rate a whopping cut. (Sen. Joe Biden voted aye.)

Now? Inflation is a dagger at the jugular of the Biden presidency.

What to do that would be safe and effective and dramatic enough to persuade us pesky voters that Biden has a firm grip on ending inflation?

Let’s walk the cat backwards. President Lyndon B. Johnson, who shut down the London gold pool, and President Richard M. Nixon, who “temporarily” closed the “gold window,” were the perps letting the inflation genie out of the bottle.

The world monetary order of the prosperous, low inflation, post-war era was constituted by the Bretton Woods Agreement. This was an international gold standard, with a critical flaw.

Making the dollar, as well as gold, the official reserve asset for central banks was a subtle, fatal error. It led to a “melancholy, long, withdrawing” of gold from America’s reserves, plaguing both America and the world.

As foreseen by distinguished French economist Jacques Rueff, mentor of supply-side titan Lewis E. Lehrman (my own mentor), that world monetary order was doomed to a slow death.

On Nixon’s watch, the final nail was driven in.

Nixon, under the insidious influence of his treasury secretary John Connally – a moral bankrupt who died a spectacular literal bankrupt – officially closed the gold window. The pernicious Nixonian system of floating exchange rates today curses us to inequitable economic stagnation.

The fiduciary (paper) dollar is the last remnant of the “Nixon Shock.”

Republicans have proven incapable of unwinding it for very parochial reasons.

The classical gold standard, which had collapsed at the very start of World War I, was falsely indicted for causing the Great Depression under Herbert Hoover a generation later.

It wasn’t the Republicans’ fault.

It was, in the words of  Rueff, a grotesque caricature of the gold standard that collapsed, an earlier gold-exchange standard.

Then FDR, under the guidance of the leading commodities economist of his day, George Warren, properly revalued the dollar from $20.67 to $35. The Great Depression lifted immediately and spectacularly. Per Pulitzer Prize-winning Liaquat Ahamed’s definitive account:

“During the following three months, wholesale prices jumped by 45% and stock prices doubled. With prices rising, the real cost of borrowing money plummeted. New orders for heavy machinery soared by 100%, auto sales doubled, and overall industrial production shot up 50%.”

Bad monetary policy by FDR’s Treasury, in which FDR acquiesced, thereafter caused a second dip in the Great Depression. That said, that first prosperity surge points the way out.

Joe Biden has an opportunity to go down in history as equal to or greater than FDR. How?

By convening a new Bretton Woods conference. Just as the late, great Paul Volcker, who quelled inflation in the 1980s, called for.

There, Biden should legally remove the dollar’s (and all currencies) reserve currency status while revaluing the dollar to around $2,000/ounce, or slightly higher, to preempt a worker/debtor damaging deflation such as crushed Britain in 1925.

Thereby, Mr. President, forge a legacy to rival that of FDR’s.

End inflation, restore equitable prosperity; enjoy the popularity and golden age legacy that Bretton Woods II, done right, would bring you.

Inflation’s Back!

by Ralph Benko

Hey la, President Biden?

Remember “The Angels“?

Inflation’s back and you’re gonna be in trouble.

Hey la, hey la, inflation’s back!

Uh oh.

While your administration denied resurging inflation Newsmax was ahead of it. Relying on the work of Prof. Steve Hanke, over six months ago I asked: Will Inflation Be the Sweet Meteor of Political Death for the Biden Administration?

Hanke’s a distinguished monetary economist. Plus: bipartisan!

Former Clinton Treasury Secretary and Director of Obama’s National Economic Policy Council Dr. Larry Summers also sounded the alarm last February, in The Washington Post:

“First… there is a chance that macroeconomic stimulus on a scale closer to World War II levels than normal recession levels will set off inflationary pressures of a kind we have not seen in a generation, with consequences for the value of the dollar and financial stability.”

The Biden White House did not just ignore Summers. It attacked him.

Ryan Lizza, Garrett Ross and Eli Okun recently asked in Newsmax’s scrappy rival, Politico, Does the WH owe Larry Summers an apology?

The reaction from the White House was fierce. Top advisers rushed to the cameras to push back. … Privately, White House officials were withering in their attacks on Summers. The White House continued to downplay inflation throughout the spring and summer. … They were wrong.”

An apology? Larry Summers once appeared on the cover of TIME with Alan Greenspan and Bob Rubin as “The Committee to Save the World.”

Summers can take care of himself. Rather, President Biden owes it to himself to consider appointing an inflation hawk like Summers Fed Chair. Or, say, Prof. Hanke.

Now the Great Mentioner is mentioning only two candidates, both monetary doves: Jerome Powell and Lael Brainard. Both are honorable, smart and capable.

But doves.

Political handicappers are calling a near lock for Powell. Mr. President?

This is no time for inflation doves.

Biden may confront the fate of presidents injured, even politically crippled, by inflation. Consider the political careers of Johnson, Nixon, Ford and Carter, all presiding over inflation, all seeing their presidencies terminated with extreme prejudice.

Coincidence? Not really.

As the first celebrity economist, John Maynard Keynes, wrote in The Economic Consequences of the Peace:

“Lenin is said to have declared that the best way to destroy the capitalist system was to debauch the currency. By a continuing process of inflation, governments can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens. By this method they not only confiscate, but they confiscate arbitrarily; and, while the process impoverishes many, it actually enriches some. The sight of this arbitrary rearrangement of riches strikes not only at security, but at confidence in the equity of the existing distribution of wealth.

“Lenin was certainly right. There is no subtler, no surer means of overturning the existing basis of society than to debauch the currency. The process engages all the hidden forces of economic law on the side of destruction and does it in a manner which not one man in a million is able to diagnose.”

Inflation—felt as rising prices yet really a sinking dollar—is politically lethal. Most politicians mishandle it. It’s that insidious.

President Biden? You are a self-proclaimed champion of capitalism and equity. So, now, pivot to good monetary policy to preempt “all the hidden forces of economic law” from settling “on the side of destruction.”

Do not end up like the hapless Jimmy Carter. As I wrote here in Will President Biden Keep Inflation from Destroying Capitalism:

Carter, in a national address, on October 24, 1978: “Inflation is obviously a serious problem. What is the solution? I do not have all the answers. Nobody does. Perhaps there is no complete and adequate answer.”

Balderdash. Top economists like Friedman and Mundell knew precisely what causes inflation. We then knew and still know the solution.

The charter document for Supply Side economics was the Mundell-Laffer Hypothesis. By far most of it was about monetary policy (noting the advantages of the gold standard for quelling inflation and creating equitable prosperity). The “Laffer Curve” was, literally, a footnote.

Reagan, campaigning on Jack Kemp’s Supply Side platform, beat Carter. Then Reagan embraced a stable dollar, giving Fed Chairman Paul Volcker the support he needed to end inflation.

Thereafter the economy soared, propelling Reagan to a historic 49-state landslide. The Supply Side formula propelled the Dow from 814 to, over time, 36,000+ while doubling America’s real per capita GDP.

To swipe a phrase from Vice President Joe Biden: BFD!

President Biden? To regain the esteem of the American people, ignore the well-intentioned experts who led you astray.

Select an inflation hawk to chair the Federal Reserve. Say… Larry Summers.

Or maybe even a Mundell acolyte: Steve Hanke. Onward to a golden age?

Hey la, hey la, inflation’s back!

The Season of Covid Confounds the Secular World

Time for a Renewal of Faith and Reason

As Covid deaths pass 800,000 by government accounts I ask this question… Who is stronger, smarter, and more adaptable to the operational environment – President Biden or nature?

The higher power of nature, AKA God, is the clear winner. Perhaps it is time to rethink the path we are on? This one appears a road filled with many known craters and still more unknown sink holes. So, where do we turn to gather the political wisdom of the ages to make the needed changes and the strength to accomplish the task?

This fall I was privileged to take a political theory class from a wonderful, Irish-born Catholic professor at Catholic University while finishing my PhD. His insight and humor opened doors! We covered the early Western philosophers from Plato and Socrates through St. Augustine and St. Thomas Aquinas. Christ was actually mentioned in our political science class!

Learning about these early Western thinkers gives me great hope for our nation and new insights into the thoughts of our Founding Fathers. What they read, I read. Given the enormity of their undertaking one can see why they turned to God and the philosophers for guidance. Reading political thought “through the ages” in a short period of time was an incredible experience.

In Philadelphia our Founding Fathers, from all walks of life, discussed the best of ideas transcending time and space. They wrapped them up for us as a gift to future generations of Americans in the U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence, and Bill of Rights.

No other people in the history of the world have received such a precious and prescient present. What fascinates me about the early Western philosophers is the evolution in their thought. They understood the failings of individual men, offered ways to protect us from ourselves, and believed fully in our journey toward the transcendental. Our nation adopted these lessons at our founding.

We dismiss them too easily. We overlook teaching their thoughts in our government-run schools. And, we fail to absorb the timeless lessons they offer future generations. Our children must become reacquainted with the potential our Founding Fathers saw in each of us.

Despite fear of the passage these men envisioned a time yet to be fully realized. Let’s recapture it and begin the journey anew….

NYC Elections Open to Non-Citizens

“Approximately 808,000 “noncitizens” may vote in future New York City elections, if the City Council welcomes them to do so, as early as December. These potential new members of the electorate would include green card holders and those with certain work permits,” according to a November 29, 2021, Daily Caller story by Deroy Murdock.

If we lose our sovereignty, ALL is lost! There are 3 basic tests that are accepted and used since the start of the modern nation-state system in 1648 (Peace of Westphalia) to determine if a location is a nation-state. We’ve lost one principle and are losing the remaining two. A 3-legged stool can’t stand without all its legs intact and neither can the United States of America.

First, there is recognition of a country by an international legal body such as the UN. Check. We are recognized as a legal nation-state.

Second, the country must have a generally understood common culture… religion, language, etc. that unite the citizens as “one people.” WE ARE LOSING THIS ONE.

Third, there is a recognized physical border that differentiates the “us” from the “them.” WE ARE LOSING THIS ONE, TOO!

Many of our fellow citizens arrived from failed or failing states. None of our legal immigrants want us to become what they escaped from in the past. Yet here we are making big mistakes with the aid of countries such as China, Russia, Iran, and others supporting ideas antithetical to everything this country has stood for since 1776.

I am not proposing taking up arms. I am proposing that each of us, as Ronald Reagan said long ago, has a responsibility to ensure that freedom is preserved for the next generation. It may be uncomfortable to talk about with those who are indoctrinated with a false truth, but we must be active or there will be no country left for the next generation to inherit from us. It is no longer enough to simply raise our families and go to work. We need to move from a passive support of our beliefs to one of active participation.

That means getting out the vote and teaching those among us who lack an understanding of how and why our country was formed and the dangers we face today. Make people aware of what is happening inside the classroom, corporate America, the media, and our government.

We the people have the power to reclaim the nation-state our Founding Fathers designed to serve us – a country governed by the people with certain tasks assigned to government that individuals can’t easily handle. We have lost our way and become slaves to the state instead of citizens of the country!

If those of us who remember don’t speak up, those who never knew will be doomed to a dark future.

DNCalifornia Train Looters Steal 80 Plus Guns

The DNCalifornia approach to ending gun violence is by passing laws that make it as illegal as they can for law-abiding Americans to possess and bear arms.  While doing this, the DNCalifornia approach to crime is to simply stop trying to prevent it or bring people to account for committing these crimes (other than thought crimes).

The result is what one might expect, more criminals are getting more guns, making more law-abiding Americans in California vulnerable to more crime by said criminals who will continue to have guns while their victims now will not.  Now, they’re robbing freight trains and absconding with the guns the trains are transporting, and the DNCalifornia Governor’s response is to apologiize for suggesting these might be gangs doing these robbings.

More Than 80 Guns Stolen By Thieves Raiding Cargo Containers Near Los Angeles

More than 80 guns have been stolen from cargo trains in the Lincoln Heights rail yards since August, according to the Los Angeles Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.

Five people have been arrested on various charges relating to the theft of 82 guns, but officials have been able to recover only a handful.

”I’ve got 24 years in LAPD, ex-military, secret clearance and I have to wait 10 days to get a new firearm and these guys are going into these containers with no locks and getting guns,” Capt. German Hurtado told the Los Angeles Times. “These guns were unguarded, unprotected. God knows how many guns have been stolen that way.”

Authorities suspect that a gang from Eastside Los Angeles is responsible for the thefts.

“This is bigger than we thought,” Hurtado said. “They aren’t just stealing shoes and stuff. This is an organized crime to the level they are stealing guns.”

Although they are among the most dangerous items taken from the…

Trudeau Can’t Shake the Canada Trucker Thunder

Canada’s truckers are shutting down the capitol and shutting down shipping over the government’s attempt to force truckers to get vaccinated, and boosted, and boosted, and boosted, and on and on.  The truckers have clogged up freeways leading in to Ottowa, virtually shutting it down.  The standoff has begun, and the truckers are well-funded through various means in what is becoming an international grass roots effort to end the Covid tyranny.

Truckers and protesters against Covid-19 mandates block a border crossing and flood Canada’s capital. Trudeau responds with sharp words

The protests stemmed from the “Freedom Convoy” of truckers that traveled across Canada for several days before arriving in the capital city of Ottawa on Saturday. The drivers oppose a recent vaccine mandate requiring truckers entering Canada to be fully vaccinated or face testing and quarantine requirements.

Downtown Ottawa remained packed with rigs and cars Monday morning as protesters rallied against Covid-19 mandates and some legislators were set to return to Parliament Hill.

Trudeau and his family have been quarantining at an undisclosed location, but he had sharp words for those causing turmoil:

“I want to be very clear: We are not intimidated by those who hurl insults and abuse at small business workers and steal food from the homeless,” he said. “We won’t give in to those who fly racist flags. We won’t cave to those who engage in vandalism or dishonor the memory of our veterans.”

In western Canada, trucks and cars have been blocking the Coutts border crossing just north of Sweet Grass, Montana, where Interstate 15 is a major commercial artery for US-Canada supply chains.

The critical route is called Highway 4 on the Canadian side.

“Alberta RCMP ask motorists to continue to stay away from Hwy 4 south of #Lethbridge to the #Coutts border crossing,” the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in Alberta tweeted late Sunday.

“Traffic continues to remain immobilized in both the NB and SB directions. At this time, no motor vehicles are able to access the border for entry/re-entry,” the agency said.

Thousands of demonstrators from across the United States descended on Washington DC to decry COVID-19 mandates on Sunday.

Many participants, mostly maskless, shouted that the government is intervening in individual health issues after the capital adopted masks and vaccine mandates.

“People shouldn’t be forced to do these things. We should have a choice,” said protester Roger Miller.

The federal government had announced plans to implement a measure that requires companies with 100 or more workers to mandate the vaccine, and for some municipalities to make it mandatory for their employees to receive the jabs.

However, they were recently shut down by the US Supreme Court.

A judge in Texas ruled last Friday that President Joe Biden could not require federal employees to be vaccinated against the coronavirus and blocked the US government from disciplining employees who failed to comply.

The administration’s measures would also have required people 12 and older to have at least one dose of the…

A Swift Solution to

A Modest Proposal for the Ivy League

by

In a recent New Yorker essay, staff writer Nicholas Lemann trembles at the thought of the end of affirmative action at the hands of a Republican-dominated Supreme Court. He assumes that non-whites (except Asians, of course) could never make it into, much less through, top schools without a helping white hand. Look out, Kipling: is this the white man’s burden in the 21st century?

Lehmann’s subhead declares: “The policy has made diversity possible.” Says who? Believe it or not, there was diversity before the Johnson Administration. Harvard graduated its first black student, Richard T. Greener, in 1870. Edward Bouchet graduated Yale in 1874. Thomas Sowell went to Harvard on the GI bill. Harvard is in Boston, a bastion of woke progressivism today, but the incubator of the eugenics movement back when that was the rationale for “progressive” race-based discrimination. Lest we forget, “follow the science” was their battle cry, too.

The trouble with affirmative action started with Plessy v. Ferguson, an 1896 decision that launched the whole dishonest enterprise. The Court, then dominated by Democrats, condoned a Louisiana law requiring trains to segregate blacks and whites in separate carriages. It was a contrived case. Plessy looked white, and it was a set-up designed to test the law. It passed. That decision upholding the “separate but equal” fantasy green-lighted Jim Crow, and the rest, as they say, was history.

Plessy was a 7-1 decision. The lone dissenter, John Marshall Harlan, was a Republican and scion of a prominent Kentucky family of former slave-holders. Harlan had a half-black half-brother, Robert James Harlan, born into slavery but reared and educated in the family. He became a successful businessman and, eventually, a member of the Ohio House of Representatives. Without affirmative action.

Brown v. Board of Education overruled Plessy in 1954. But the original Brown decision did not endorse affirmative action: it outlawed segregation, i.e., differential treatment based on race. But race-based differential treatment is precisely what the champions of affirmative action today want to perpetuate.

Has affirmative action wrought lasting change in the corridors of power? Neither side seems satisfied. Lemann plainly believes the practice needs to continue because the work is not done. But is it a good idea? Thomas Sowell has demonstrated that race preference programs worldwide have not met expectations and often produced the opposite of what was intended. (Sowell believes “diversity” is an empty magic word.) John Hindraker observes that “every major institution in the United States has engaged in “affirmative action,” which means discriminating in favor of blacks and, to a lesser extent, Hispanics, for the last 50 years. If any “systemic racism” has become embedded in our society, it is in the realm of affirmative action.”

Should we continue to place bets on such a sorry horse?

How can we fix this? Dallas Justice Now, a band of woke Texans, asks wealthy white parents not to send their children to elite schools “to leave those spots open for students from Black, LatinX, and other marginalized backgrounds.” I’m not holding my breath. Wealthy parents regularly decline opportunities to send their kids to public school even as they oppose vouchers that would give poor parents that choice.

Here’s a better idea: If you really want to achieve diversity, run a lottery.

I mean it. Set aside some spaces for legacies, athletes, and the well-connected to keep the cash coming. (Not hard, you’ve been doing it forever.) But then take that mountain of well-qualified applicants, throw them into a big barrel, and find a blind person to pull out as many names as needed to fill the remaining slots. Let fate decide. Money’s no issue. Harvard has more money than God — $41.9 billion — and could fund every student through 2050 without running low. And don’t BS me about students who might not be “prepared.” That’s woke-speak for “from the wrong side of the tracks,” another condescending socioeconomic slur. Repurpose admissions officers as mentors to help new kids navigate those ivory towers and ivied halls. If your school is as good as everyone — especially you — think it is, you can set those students firmly on the path to success.

Adopt the lottery approach, and you’ll have a bulletproof defense against discrimination. There’s no more neutral principle than the luck of the draw.

But the greatest benefit of all is that instead of a raft of entitled, snotty-nosed brats who think they’re smarter than everybody else, you’ll have an entering class who feel lucky. What passes for merit is mostly luck, anyway: the good fortune of being born in a prosperous country, to caring parents, plus (as Malcolm Gladwell explains) good timing.

So, Nick, don’t spoil that craft beer with your salty tears. If the Supreme Court finally nails the coffin shut on affirmative action, it may be the best thing that could happen to those it pretends to help. Affirmative action hasn’t worked, and it isn’t not about merit. It’s luck, a golden ticket.” So let’s just go ahead and treat it that way.

Fauci Family Makes Millions As Long as p

Dr. Anthony Fauci, the father and Lord of Science itself, has been leading the charge in justifying jab mandates, mask mandates, lockdowns, and shutdowns.  Americans have been crippled financially, and our small businesses have been going out of business, replaced by the corporate businesses that could remain open while small businesses remained shut down.

Dr. Fauci owns this misery, this loss of wealth by the Americans below the multimillionaire line these patrician moral supremacists operate over.  Fauci, for instance, while he shuts down our means of making of living, is getting $1.7 million in his bank account thanks  to the salaries he and his wife and co-conspirator rake in from our government while this pandemic goes on.

Fauci’s family is seettling in at $10.7 million in worth, and those numbers are only going to grow as long as we remain shut out of our means of making a living thanks to the Lord of Science’s unelected edicts from on high, from a mountain that’s raining Benjamins for the Faucis day by day, week by week, year by year.

Talk about a conflict of interest, give a man a job that pays him millions to run a pandemic and see how ready he is to actually move to end it.

DNC Working on Weaponizing Copyright Law for Pol

Anti-Americanists, using SJW moral constructs in defiance of American Rule of Law standards, are busy working to use “social justice” as a justification to assure the corporate-state-media machine narrative is further protected by strictly limiting how humans can share their lived experiences and deconstruct them through the lens of adult human beings as opposed to the unhealthy and unwholesome Peter Pen lenses these Anti-Americanists view the world through.

To put it more simply, they want to significantly limit, if not eliminate, any semblence of ‘fair use’ in copyright law to block content creators on various social media platforms from creating content that undermines the official MSM-CCP-DNC narrative the “left” wants to force down everyone’s throats and eyes and ears and every human pore.

Gathering a coven of ill-informed leftists to craft documents even attempting to justify such actions in the name of social justice has thus far produced the kind of laughable results you’d expect from a gang of ‘lived experience’ ‘scholars’ attempting to formulate rational thought based on the actual evidence at hand. It appears the attempted drafters have demonstrated in their own words a fundamental, rudimentary lack of understanding of the very copyright laws they are seeking to change, end, or replace.

The more lies you tell to create your power, the more resources you will have to bring to bear to protect those lies from being exposed by your competition.  This is what is going on right here, yet another escalation between free thought and thought control, with thought control about to take on billions more dollars in expense to attempt to enforce.

Perhaps the Empire of Lies might not have infinite resources, and if so, the legislative fruit of these first steps, should they be passed, would even more dramatically hasten the end of the Empire of Lies on the weight of its own mounting enforcement debt and unintentional cost to the Empire as a whole in terms of creating flourishing from the citizens this Empire controls.

SJW Legal Scholars, Funded by Google, Seek to Eviscerate Copyright Protections Through ‘Restatement’ of Law – RedState

Now a massive astroturfing effort is happening in the field of copyright law, and anyone who produces creative content should be paying close attention. As I wrote last week, there are major problems with the American Law Institute’s Restatement project, starting with how the project was initiated (at the request of a Google-funded, anti-copyright law activist professor) and the Lead Reporter’s unacknowledged conflicts of interest. Major flaws in the draft Restatement have been pointed out by other prominent copyright law scholars, a bipartisan group from Congress, the Register of Copyrights (the director of the Copyright Office), and even Advisors to the project. All of these groups essentially claim that the Restatement incorrectly interprets the Copyright Act and the policy preferences of the Reporters are improperly included. A letter to ALI from 10 of the project’s advisors states:

The Draft has a variety of problems including inaccurately summarizing the text of the Copyright Act, confusing explanations of important principles and misleading illustrations. Moreover, as further detailed below, these problems uniformly reflect an unduly restrictive view of copyright law that is not consistent with the robust statutory rights granted by Congress to authors.
