After parental backlash and alleged threats to its workers, the Australian retail chain Big W, has announced plans to pull the children’s version of the book “Welcome to Sex” called “Welcome to Sex: Your no-silly-questions guide to sexuality, pleasure, and figuring it out.” In the children’s book, it covers explicit sexual details and encourages children to explore their sexuality, including how to “scissor” if they’re engaging in lesbian sex.
Perhaps the most disturbing part of this story is the fact that, while most parents wanted these books gone, some parents supported the books, referring to people as not wanting their children to read these books as being phobic, bigoted, narrow-minded, and uptight. The company didn’t remove the books out of a sense of moral correctness, but out of fear, stating, “We know there has been a wide range of views about the book, however it’s disappointing that there have been multiple incidents of abuse directed at our store team members in the past 24 hours. To keep our team and customers safe, the book will be available to customers online only from later today.”
