A coalition of Western African Nations called the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has met and confirmed plans to activate troops to confront the junta of Niger that overthrew their duly elected Prime Minister. The full details of the military intervention force were not given, but, tellingly, Nigeria, a member of the coalition, reversed its course, stating it is now committed to sending troops to deal with the Niger crisis.
Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tunubu, who is the current head of the coalition, said in the meeting “It is crucial that we prioritize diplomatic negotiations and dialogue as the bedrock of our approach.” He also added that leaders must act with a “sense of urgency.” The mixed signals from the coalition make it uncertain that troops will be deployed and then used to invade the junta-led Nigeran state.
