America’s top rival, China, is pouncing on the appearance of weakness by the US in their manner of withdrawal from Afghanistan to undermine American reputational power abroad while seeking Chinese reputational power increase in the region. You could view China similarly to Absolom, who parked outside the gates of Jerusalem offering ‘better judgment’ than his father David did by simply telling the powerful what they wanted to hear. In this case, China is telling those the Americans have abandoned, the ‘allies’ in the region that risked their lives, the lives of their families, to side with American interest, that China will do for them what Absolom did for those who felt wronged by David, deliver to them relief from their injustice. Given China’s recent history in handling its new-found power of Imperialist colonialism, there’s little chance the people of this region will fare any better than any other ‘ally’ of China has so far.
