The Devastating Impact Of A Cyber Disaster

We must recognize that such an attack would be brutal. 

1. IMPACT ON MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY – Hospitals would be paralyzed, and thousands of patients would die. Further, anyone using a medical device that is reliant on technology, whether that be a digital pacemaker or a ventilator, or someone undergoing an emergency surgery during the disaster, would most likely die as those devices failed.
   
   
2. IMPACT ON BANKING AND TRANSPORTATION – Modern banking, especially online banking, would become nonexistent, as most banks utilize digital transfers to facilitate money movement. Physical bank runs would occur, generated by people fortunate enough to be able to find some means of transportation, since public transportation, traffic controls, air traffic control, and even some personal vehicles made within the last five years would become dysfunctional. Fuel prices would spike as gas production corporations shut down, and then fuel would become a rarity, thereby halting the use of most other personal vehicles.
   
   
3. BARTERING AND CHAOS – A third-world style bartering system would almost instantly arise as food suppliers and commercial producers of other goods would be unable to manufacture or ship their wares. Chaos would break out as mobs sought to extract goods from stores and individuals went insane from extreme stress.
   
   
4. UTILITIES – Utilities such as power, running water, gas lines, and television would grind to a halt as companies either lost control of their systems, could not bill their customers, or could not determine where and how services were being distributed.
   
   
5. TECH JOBS ELIMINATED – In this world, any non-government job that relied upon technology would immediately become irrelevant, but strong censorship of the remains of the Internet would occur. Any online database would most likely be breached by hackers, and all the information contained in those databases, including private health information, would be curated and sorted to be sold to criminals or to be wielded by governments.
   
   
6. NARRATIVES AND PROPAGANDA – Meanwhile, as personal information would be disseminated, all counter-narratives to the desired story regarding what is happening and why it is happening would be repressed both digitally and physically. Cyber Polygon suggests that “fake news” is the new threat to humanity; the governments who are able to leverage the unfolding cyberdisaster will define their narrative as the truth, and all other narratives as fake news, and proponents of any other ideas will be silenced as chaos inhibits true justice. Cybersecurity and other technical experts would likely be drafted into the military or be forced to work for federal agencies to deal with the ongoing crisis. If the disaster were to be perpetrated in the US, Russia or China would most likely attempt to assume control of the Internet and perpetrate their restrictive agenda to the rest of the cyberdomain.
