The director of Amnesty International USA on Wednesday said Israel “shouldn’t exist as a Jewish state” in the wake of his organization’s release of a controversial report on Israel that drew backlash from U.S. officials.

American Jews want a “safe Jewish space,” Executive Director Paul O’Brien said, rather than an explicitly Jewish state. O’Brien, who is not Jewish, called on the Jewish community to “collectively change the conversation” and bring about a secular state by adhering to “core Jewish values, which are to be principled and fair and just.”

“Amnesty takes no political views on any question, including the right of the State of Israel to survive,” O’Brien said.

O’Brien made the remarks, which were reported by Jewish Insider, at an event hosted by the Woman’s National Democratic Club. The director of the human-rights group defended a report released last month by his parent organization that accused Israel of carrying out an apartheid against Palestinians and called for…

A House Democrat leading an investigation of oil industry “misinformation” blames social media companies for blocking legislation to counter climate change, even as Big Tech corporations moves to demonetize and suppress debate on climate-related issues.

Google acted to demonetize “climate denial” information. Facebook upped its fact-checking of climate-related posts, and emails obtained by watchdog groups show it targeted conservative site PragerU and independent journalist John Stossel. Twitter promised to be a forum only for credible content on climate change.

Rep. Ro Khanna, D-Calif., is chairman of the House Oversight and Reform Committee’s subcommittee on the on the environment, which has conducted two hearings on oil “misinformation” and postponed a third.

Could Re-Engineered Red Blood Cells Help Us Combat Covid-19?

Researchers re-engineer red blood cells to trigger immune system against COVID-19 — ScienceDaily

Physicists, chemists and immunologists at McMaster University have teamed up to modify red blood cells to transport viral agents which can safely trigger the immune system to protect the body against SARS-CoV-2, creating a promising new vehicle for vaccine delivery.

Developing new strategies and vaccine technologies is critical for controlling the pandemic and preparing for future outbreaks as the coronavirus continues to evolve and mutate, say the researchers.

The new method, described in the journal PLOS ONE, is an entirely unique approach to vaccination. Red blood-cell membranes are embedded with SARS-CoV-2 spike proteins, which then form virus-like particles.

“We take red blood cells and remove everything from the inside. We then attach spike proteins to their outside to mimic a corona virus,” explains graduate student Isabella Passos-Gastaldo, a lead author on the paper.

The particles, shown to activate the immune system and produce antibodies in mice, are completely…

Justice Clarence Thomas has been hospitalized with an infection, the Supreme Court announced in a statement.

Thomas was admitted to Sibley Memorial Hospital in Washington, D.C., on Friday evening after experiencing flu-like symptoms, Supreme Court spokesperson Patricia McCabe said in a statement.

He was diagnosed with an infection after undergoing tests and is being treated with intravenous antibiotics, McCabe said. She did not provide more details on the nature of the infection.

“His symptoms are abating, he is resting comfortably, and he expects to be released from the hospital in a day or two,” McCabe said. “Justice Thomas will participate in the consideration and discussion of any cases for which he is not present on the basis of the briefs, transcripts and audio of the oral arguments.”

A professor was locked out of his classes and email account without warning in apparent retaliation for criticizing his Christian university’s use of “diversity” and “equity” as criteria for selecting its new president, he and several witnesses told The Federalist.

The Rev. Dr. Greg Schulz was immediately and indefinitely suspended from his classes at Concordia University Wisconsin and banned from campus by interim college President William Cario on Feb. 18, a Friday. That was not formally conveyed to Schulz, however, until his lawyer obtained the suspension letter on Feb. 22, Schulz’s Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty attorney Dan Lennington told The Federalist.

“They told him to ‘recant’ in a memo that they never gave him,” Lennington said in a phone call. Lennington also noted his public interest law firm, which won a high-profile 2016 academic freedom case in Wisconsin’s Supreme Court, has “never heard of something like this” swift…

Justices eye expansion of religious exemption to anti-bias law

(Reuters) – Members of the U.S. Supreme Court’s conservative wing on Monday signaled an interest in expanding an exemption for religious employers from anti-discrimination laws, but turned away a case raising the issue involving a social work professor at a Christian college in Massachusetts.

The court declined to review a decision from Massachusetts’s state supreme court that said the professor, Margaret DeWeese-Boyd, could sue Gordon College for allegedly denying her a promotion because she criticized the school’s anti-LGBT policies.

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court found that DeWeese-Boyd did not teach religion, lead students in prayer or deliver sermons, distinguishing her from other workers who courts have found to qualify for the so-called “ministerial exception” from anti-discrimination laws.

The Supreme Court has agreed to hear arguments in four cases challenging the constitutionality of a decades-old federal law aimed at protecting Native American children.

The Court granted certiorari Monday in Brackeen v. Haaland, consolidating it with three other cases: Haaland v. Brackeen, Cherokee Nation v. Brackeen, and Texas v. Haaland.

“The petitions for writs of certiorari are granted,” the Court said in its order Monday, adding that the cases will be consolidated going forward. The Court limited oral argument to a total of one hour and set a briefing schedule for the parties.

All four cases stem from efforts by Chad Brackeen and Jennifer Brackeen, a Texas couple, to adopt a Navajo child. The Brackeens, who are white evangelical Christians and not Native…

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP/KSNW) — A federal judge has permanently blocked a Kansas law prohibiting out-of-state groups from mailing advance ballot applications to voters who request them.

On Friday, U.S. District Judge Kathryn Vratil declared those provisions in the law violate the First and Fourteenth Amendments of the U.S. Constitution and permanently enjoined the state from enforcing them.

The court ordered the state to pay the attorney fees of two national nonprofit groups who say it disenfranchises voters.

The state has agreed not to appeal the order.

It partially resolves the lawsuit brought by VoteAmerica and the Voter Participation Center. In January, Vratil granted a preliminary injunction against the new law before it took effect.

The Voter Participation Center (VPC) is a nonprofit and nonpartisan organization. Tom Lopach, the VPC president and CEO, said the judge’s decision will allow…

In a world first, a quantum gravity sensor has been used to detect a buried structure outside of laboratory conditions, offering “a new lens into the underground”.

The quantum gravity gradiometer was used to find a tunnel buried outdoors in real-world conditions one metre below the ground surface at the Birmingham University campus.

The sensor was developed by University of Birmingham researchers from the UK National Quantum Technology Hub in Sensors and Timing as part of the Gravity Pioneer project. The research results were recently published in the journal Nature.

The sensor works by detecting variations in microgravity using the principles of quantum physics, which is based on manipulating nature at the submolecular level.

The Gravity Pioneer project is a collaboration between the University of Birmingham, environmental, engineering and sustainability solutions provider RSK, the…
