Shahbaz Sharif was elected with 174 votes in his favor after more than 100 lawmakers from Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, or Pakistan Justice Party, staged a walkout of the National Assembly in protest.

“Mohammad Shahbaz Sharif is declared to be the prime minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan,” announced the acting speaker, Asad Sadiq.

The former opposition will now run a truncated house with a small majority of 174 lawmakers, which is enough to pass laws in the 342-seat assembly. However, if Khan’s followers take to the…

Baby Formula Rationing Now Happening in U.S.

Baby Formula Shortage, Partially Prompted by Recall, Leads Stores to Ration

Some stores across the U.S. have begun to ration baby formula, less than two months after a recall that was caused by infant illnesses and deaths contributed to shortages in some areas of the country.

An estimated 30 percent of popular formula brands may be sold out across the country, according to a Datasembly analysis of over 11,000 stores reported by USA Today.

USA Today also reported that Walgreens is limiting shoppers to three infant and toddler formula products per transaction “to help improve inventory,” a company spokesperson told the newspaper.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) indicated that at least two deaths may have been linked to infants consuming bacteria in formula products earlier this year, Newsweek previously reported. The infections and deaths led Abbott Nutrition to recall batches of several different products.

The products were recalled after FDA investigations revealed that the Michigan facility where the batches were produced had failed to follow sanitary…

Mask Mandates 2.0?

Mask Mandates May Be Coming Back In Some Places—And Sticking Around For Air Travel

From www.forbes.com

Excerpt:

Travelers might have to hold on to their face masks for a while longer. As the daily number of reported Covid-19 cases is moving upward again in the United States, driven by the highly transmissible omicron BA.2 subvariant, there are signs that mask mandates may stick around on the travel landscape.

The percentage of Americans who say they always wear a mask in public has dropped to just 23%, its lowest level since April 2020, according to tracking data from the University of Washington in Seattle. Notably, vaccinated Americans are more than twice as likely (70%) as unvaccinated Americans (32%) to report wearing a mask in public places regularly, per data from the Pew Research Center.

At the same time, testing has also significantly dropped off, so getting a handle on a true number of daily infections has become more difficult for officials. According to…

President Aleksandar Vucic said Belgrade is continuing to pay for the transit of gas to his country

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic has urged neighboring Bulgaria not to stop the flow of Russian gas through the TurkStream pipeline. Sofia said it will not renew the contract with Moscow in light of its military campaign against Ukraine.

“It’s important to us that Bulgaria doesn’t interrupt the operation of the pipeline,” Vucic said on Sunday, adding that his country is paying for transit.

“We’re saying that we want the Russian gas from the TurkStream pipeline, so let us take it, we’re paying for it. And what you do is your business, and what you want is your business, we have no issue with it.”

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy chairman of the Russian security council, on Monday threatened Poland in a lengthy letter, just days before U.S. President Joe Biden is due to visit the country.

“The interests of the citizens of Poland have been sacrificed due to Russophobia of ‘mediocre politicians’ and their ‘puppeteers from across the ocean’ with clear signs of senile insanity,” the former Russian president and prime minister wrote in a post on his Telegram channel.

Medvedev was referring to a decision made by Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki last week to minimize dependence on Russia and sever economic ties with Moscow in response to the Ukraine invasion that began on February 24.

“We will deal with the de-Russification of the Polish and European economy,” Morawiecki told a news conference on March 18. “We call for the suspension of activities on the Russian market.”

Morawiecki told reporters the move will help stop food prices rising. The United Nations food agency said this month…

Ukraine‘s two leading suppliers of neon, which produce about half the world’s supply of the key ingredient for making chips, have halted their operations as Moscow has sharpened its attack on the country, threatening to raise prices and aggravate the semiconductor shortage.

Some 45 to 54 per cent of the world’s semiconductor-grade neon, critical for the lasers used to make chips, comes from two Ukrainian companies, Ingas and Cryoin, according to Reuters calculations based on figures from the companies and market research firm Techcet.

Global neon consumption for chip production reached about 540 metric tons last year, Techcet estimates.

China Expanding Military Budget

In a Period of Brute Force, China Increases Its Military Budget Yet Again

The Chinese Communist Party announced this week it will increase the budget for the People’s Liberation Army by 7.1%.

The announcement occurred at the opening session of the National People’s Congress—the annual rubber-stamp parliament. Thus, it is just a matter of time before the extra resources start following to the People’s Liberation Army.

This increase continues the trend of sustained increases in the Chinese military budget. Since 2018, the Chinese Communist Party has increased the People’s Liberation Army budget by over 28% with consecutive annual increases of between 8.1% and 6.6%.

Contrast this with the U.S. defense budget which grew little under 5% from 2018 to 2021. However, if you take inflation into account, the U.S. defense budget decreased by 3% in those four years.

More than seven hours after communication was lost with the plane, there was still no word of survivors.

The Civil Aviation Administration of China said in a statement the crash occurred near the city of Wuzhou in the Guangxi region. The flight was traveling from Kunming in the southwestern province of Yunnan to the industrial center of Guangzhou along the east coast, it added.

Villagers were first to arrive at the forested area where the plane went down, sparking a blaze big enough to be seen on NASA satellite images. Hundreds of rescue workers were swiftly dispatched from Guangxi and neighboring Guangdong province.

The plane was carrying 123 passengers and nine crew members, the CAAC said, correcting earlier reports that 133 people had…

Recharge as Fast as You Pump Thanks to Quantum Physics

New technology to make charging electric cars as fast as pumping gas

Excerpt:

To address this problem, scientists looked for answers in the mysterious field of quantum physics. Their search has led to the discovery that quantum technologies may promise new mechanisms to charge batteries at a faster rate. Such concept of “quantum battery” has been first proposed in a seminal paper published by Alicki and Fannes in 2012. It was theorized that quantum resources, such as entanglement, can be used to vastly speed up the battery charging process by charging all cells within the battery simultaneously in a collective manner.

….Recently, scientists from the Center for Theoretical Physics of Complex Systems within the Institute for Basic Science (IBS) further explored these questions. The paper, which was chosen as an “Editor’s Suggestion” in the journal Physical Review Letters, showed that all-to-all coupling is irrelevant in quantum batteries and that the presence of global operations is the only ingredient in the quantum advantage. The group went further to pinpoint the exact source of this advantage while ruling out any other possibilities and even provided an explicit way of designing such batteries.

After admitting to a “coding logic error,” agency strikes out 24% of deaths among children

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) admitted last week that nearly a quarter of Covid-19 deaths among children were counted due to a “coding logic error.” This same algorithmical error caused deaths from the virus to be overcounted in all age groups.

“On March 15, 2022, data on deaths were adjusted after resolving a coding logic error. This resulted in decreased death counts across all demographic categories,” read a footnote on the CDC’s Covid Data Tracker website. In a statement to Reuters, the CDC said that fixing this error removed 72,277 deaths previously reported across 26 states, including 416 pediatric deaths.

More than 968,000 people in the US have died of Covid-19, per CDC data, with age group data available for 784,303 of these deaths. Only 1,356 of these people were under the age of 18, meaning children accounted for…
