Early studies suggest that people who are infected with the Omicron virus might develop a super immunity to the Coronavirus as a whole, making it significantly more effective than current vaccine and booster options offer.

Early evidence suggests Omicron infection could give people ‘superimmunity’ against future coronavirus variants, but experts warn COVID-19 is still unpredictable

From businessinsider.com

Excerpt:

  • The combination of vaccination and immunity from natural infection produces strong protection, data suggest.
  • Most data we have is from the time when Delta was dominant, but emerging evidence suggests the same could be true for Omicron.
  • Exposure to Omicron and other variants may diversify the immune response to any strain of the virus.

Thanks to a new breakthrough from a team working out of Technical University of Munich, the blind might now see, at least in infrared.

New Device Lets People Who Are Blind “See” in Infrared

Watch out, Matt Murdock — there may be a new Daredevil in Hell’s Kitchen soon enough! While Murdock’s superhero character relies on super hearing, taste and electrical impulses to see because he is blind, IRL folks with low vision may soon have access to a new pair of goggles that uses infrared technology to assist in navigating the world around them.

Manuel Zahn and Armaghan Ahmad Khan at the Technical University of Munich in Germany published yet-to-be peer-reviewed new research on their 3D camera and haptic feedback armband.

“Even in the present era, visually impaired people face a constant challenge of navigation,” the pair wrote in their study. “The most common tool available to them is the cane. Although the cane allows good detection of objects in the user’s immediate vicinity, it lacks the ability to detect obstacles further away.”

Zahn’s design uses a pair of infrared cameras inserted in 3D-printed prototype goggles to capture a stereoscopic image that a small computer uses to create a map of the surrounding area. Because it uses infrared, the goggles work even in the dark. The setup’s armband uses 25 actuators in a grid that vibrate to help users understand how close objects are, as well as how they’re oriented. If a user walks towards an obstacle, the vibration intensity of the respective actuators gradually increases.

Meta Creating Multi-Tasking AI

Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta is looking to expand their AI powers by creating AI capable of multi-tasking.

Meta’s new learning algorithm can teach AI to multi-task

From technologyreview.com

Excerpt:

A team at Meta AI (previously Facebook AI Research) wants to change that. The researchers have developed a single algorithm that can be used to train a neural network to recognize images, text, or speech. The algorithm, called Data2vec, not only unifies the learning process but performs at least as well as existing techniques in all three skills. “We hope it will change the way people think about doing this type of work,” says Michael Auli, a researcher at Meta AI.

The research builds on an approach known as self-supervised learning, in which neural networks learn to spot patterns in data sets by themselves, without being guided by labeled examples. This is how large language models like GPT-3 learn from vast bodies of unlabeled text scraped from the internet, and it has driven many of the recent advances in deep learning.

Scientists Propose Creating Mechanical Trees to Suck Up Evil Carbon Dioxide

If it’s a mechanical tree, does the Lorax still speak for it? Sure, the mechanical trees we’re talking about don’t have a disco mode like the Oak-amatic in the 2012 “Lorax” film, but they do have a big job — soaking up rogue carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

In a new interview published yesterday in InverseArizona State University professor Klaus Lackner, a pioneer in direct air capture and carbon storage, explained his mechanical trees and the future of capturing CO2 directly from the air to stave off climate change.

“They’re tall vertical columns of discs coated with a chemical resin, about five feet in diameter, with the discs about two inches apart, like a stack of records,” Lackner told Inverse. “As the air blows through, the surfaces of the discs absorb CO2. After 20 minutes or so, the discs are full, and they sink into a barrel below. We send in water and steam to release the CO2 into a closed environment.”

Back in July of 2021, ASU announced that Lackner received $2.5 million in Department of Energy funding to work on his CO2 capture devices. At the time, Lackner was planning three farms that could soak up 1,000 tons of CO2 per day. According to Inverse, the first of these farms will open for business in April this year.

Roe v Wade Anniversary: Opposing Abortion Isn’t Christian, Evangelist Says news

From blackchronicle.com

Excerpt:

Like millions of Americans, I was told that the Religious Right was born out of a great moral abhorrence to the Court’s ruling in Roe, that millions of Americans awoke from political apathy and rose up in opposition to abortion. But, as religious historian Randall Balmer demonstrated in his recent release, Bad Faith, this history has been whitewashed–literally. Immediately before and after the Roe decision, many of the nation’s prominent evangelical leaders and the largest white evangelical denomination, the Southern Baptist Convention, supported Roe.

In truth, it was another Supreme Court action that catalyzed massive evangelical organizing. Preserving segregation, not protecting life, was the genesis of the Religious Right movement…..

…..Christianity in America is identified with an opposition to abortion. But it is an opposition without much Christian heart. And the casualties are women’s actual lives and their ability to exercise agency over their own bodies, futures and stories.

‘Now There Is No One’: The Lament of One of the Last Christians in a Syrian City

From www.nytimes.com
2022-01-23 10:00:16

Excerpt:

On Christmas Day, Michel Butros al-Jisri, one of the last Christians in the Syrian city of Idlib, didn’t attend services, because the Islamist rebels who control the area had long since locked up the church. Nor did he gather with friends and relatives to celebrate around a tree because nearly all of his fellow Christians have either died or fled during Syria’s 10-year civil war.

Instead, Mr. al-Jisri said, he went to the city’s Christian cemetery, which no one uses anymore, to sit among the graves of his forebears and mark the day quietly, by himself.

“Who am I going to celebrate the holiday with? The walls?” he asked. “I don’t want to celebrate if I am alone.”

Mr. al-Jisri, who is 90, stooped and almost deaf but still fairly robust, is a living relic of one of the many formerly vibrant Christian communities in the Middle East that appear headed for extinction.

Communities across the Middle East and North Africa — some of which trace their roots to Christianity’s…

Why Accepting Child Transgenderism Will Pave The Way For Pedophilia

From thefederalist.com

The push for childhood transgenderism is predicated on a perverse and extreme individualistic sentiment, specifically that children’s rights as individuals imply an autonomous ability to make irreversible decisions regarding their health, rather than require protection from parents and a culture that fend off all that endangers the most vulnerable.

The dangerous claim that children can meaningfully consent to puberty blockers, hormone replacement therapy, or genital mutilation is, besides itself being deeply harmful, also leading our society down a sinister path towards accepting pedophilia…..

As children are lured into the world of transgenderism, they become open to a number of abuses beyond cross-sexual treatments. One study found that children with a recent onset of gender dysphoria (62.5 percent of whom had previously been diagnosed with “at least one mental health disorder or neurodevelopmental disability”) began to isolate themselves from their families and distrust those who weren’t trans, both of which lead to further isolation.

To make matters worse, transgender figures have told children that “it’s okay to walk away from unsupportive … parents” and to exchange them for a “glitter family, your queer family,” before inviting these children to call or Skype him. And what do “supportive” families look like anyways? How many “supportive” families have encouraged their children to become trans in exchange for social media’s fleeting dopamine hits?

The New Yorker Lies Again About Clarence Thomas And His Wife

Jane Mayer of The New Yorker magazine and her fellow lefties are ramping up attacks on conservative Supreme Court justices, as they fear the court is getting ready to issue a host of decisions they won’t like, most especially a ruling that may overturn Roe v. Wade. Mayer published a pathetic “hit” piece last week on Ginni Thomas, a long-time conservative activist and the wife of Justice Clarence Thomas. It’s a dud.

Mayer’s article, titled “Ginni Thomas’ Crusades: Is Ginni Thomas a threat to the Supreme Court?” is full of falsehoods and distortions, consistent with the malicious and error-filled book she co-authored in 1994, “Strange Justice: The Selling of Clarence Thomas.” Weaving together a mishmash of facts, conspiracies, and comments from dial-them-up liberal judicial ethics “experts,” Mayer argues that Ginni Thomas’ political activities and public comments on issues that come before the court require Justice Thomas to recuse himself from…
