It looks like Chairman Xi is no longer shy about the comparisons between himself and Chairman Mao being made. He has “accepted” the title of “Great Leader” from the 20th Party Congress, where he expects to be confirmed for a third term as the de facto one-man government of China.
The 20th Party Congress will start October 16th of this year at Beijing. There are conflicting reports of Xi consolidating power, as well as of reports that the Covid lockdown disaster and the property scheme collapse have made Xi vulnerable to rivals.
We don’t predict a Xi cancellation or reduction after the 20th Party congress. If anything, we expect his power to be even more consolidated than it already is. The congress seems already to be telegraphing his victory by confering the “Great Leader” title on him.
This is not to say Xi should feel secure going forward. His problems aren’t going away, from without and from within. His long-term prognosis is not great.
