Soul Surfer – An Inspirational Look at How It Prevailed

Before it’s release in early April of this year, Soul Surfer was thrown to the critics like meat to the hounds. Most critics, and some people, picked away at the melodramatic tone, seemingly slim target audience, and the lack of elegance the story’s plot contained. They moaned and complained about how overly done the message seemed, and how the story seemed almost unbelievable because of this reason and that reason. Yet, most critics could not seem to predict how successful the film would be. Most critics didn’t want to believe that a movie that seemed to be more kitsch than it is refined.

It’s domestic gross sales reached  $42,181,380, over $10,000.000 of that being in its opening weekend catapulting it to the top, where it would stay for quite some time. What most critics left out was the overall appeal of this movie to, not only Christians, but thousands of adolescent girls who needed someone to look up to. The protagonist, Bethany Hamilton, was more inspiration than most of the insipid, overly marketed, make-up spattered women that hog the spotlight of American music and television. So, despite what it lacked, the message it sent helped it to sky rocket and maintain a top ten position in the box office for six weeks. Just going to show that sometimes a message can help promote something more than its acting or special effects.
