Apart from a tiny bit of profanity, joviality over a man removing his “due” and a flitting anxiety to an incorrigible liaison, there’s not a lot of honestly disgusting calm on Christina Perri’s debut. But her scarcely consistent concentration on a cracks in her damaged heart left me panting for romantic air. Strength of will and a solve to make it by is clear on a few tracks. But a Lilith Fair-sized ardour for deplorable introspection is positively required to “enjoy” this release.

New York Times reviewer Jon Caramanica had a identical experience. He writes, “[Perri's] angst becomes toilsome over a length of an album. … Mostly she’s downtrodden, and she can’t see a approach out.”
