A Pakistani woman has been sentenced to death under the country’s blasphemy laws because of her status as a Christian and a dispute over water brought to Muslim women in a farm field.

Asia Bibi, 45, was sentenced to death by a court in the town of Sheikhupura, near the city of Lahore.

Christian persecution watchdog groups and human right officials are calling the verdict a gross misrepresentation of Pakistan’s constitution and a fresh reason for the country’s blasphemy laws to be wiped off the books.

The court heard she had been working as a farmhand in fields with other women, when she was asked to fetch drinking water.

Some of the other women – all Muslims – refused to drink the water as it had been brought by a Christian and was therefore “unclean”, according to Mrs Bibi’s evidence, sparking a row.
