Obama Oil Slick Could Have Been Prevented
On June 18, 2010, the “Federal On Scene Coordinator” announced, “. . . the FOSC, in coordination with other federal agencies, determined on June 16, 2010, pursuant to 46 U.S.C. §55113, that there are an insufficient number of specialized oil skimming vessels in the U.S. to keep pace with the unprecedented levels of oil discharges in the Gulf of Mexico. Based upon this determination, foreign specialized skimming vessels may be deployed to response operations.”
In others words, after 6 weeks of allowing oil to spread and denude the Gulf Coast, some bureaucrat agreed to do what Governors of Gulf States and local officials have been demanding from the moment the Deep Horizon Drill blew up and started “leaking.”
The Federal Government’s culpability is worse than BP’s in that the many effective counter-measures that should have been taken to prevent ANY oil from reaching the coastline, and from spreading far afield into fishing waters, were intentionally delayed and denied by officials who are mired in their own Byzantine world of regulations and rules that make no sense.
One regulation by the EPA does not allow for skimming water and then discharging the water after the oil is separated from it because the discharged water still contains miniscule amounts of oil. This regulation is reducing the effectiveness of “skimmers”, vessels that skim the water’s surface to suck in the oil and separate it from the water, by 90%.
In places like Norway and the Netherlands, no such regulations exist. The idea is to skim the most oil POSSIBLE, dump the mostly oil-free water overboard, and store only the oil. In the US, thanks to the EPA, water with only 10% oil is stored, but this means that vessels designed to pick up, say, 4,000 barrels would really only collect 400 barrels of oil! The Obama Oil Slick is spreading at the rate of over 60,000 barrels a day!
The 4,000 barrel skimmer is the largest US vessel, which were the only ones on site until the June 16th decision to allow foreign skimmers that are MUCH larger.
While the present American President is demanding billions from BP, which some fear will be used for political cronies, he is not accepting responsibility for the fact that it is the Federal Government, and the Federal Government alone, that has turned an oil drilling disaster which could have been quickly contained and had very limited impact, into one of the worse Government-made disasters in our time!
