What’s Next? No Praying?

Seniors at a public housing complex in Texas have enjoyed having church services brought to them on Sunday for the last 14 years but the Housing Authority says “No more!” They claim it is a violation of separation of church and state. The residents do not agree. The Methodist church will be missed very much by residents especially those like Myna Hardy, who is 84, who has attended ever since services started.
Mary Russ President of the Housing Authority says worship services violate the agency contract with U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Developement, which funds the housing. “It’s all federal money, so we’re subject to constitutional prohibitions,” Russ said. “It’s like prayer in public schools. It’s the same deal.” However a HUD spokesman from Washington, DC, Russ Brown, said the Fair Housing Act does not prohibit religious activity in common areas of public housing as long the activity does not result in unequal treatment of residents. As long as the housing authoritydoesn’t support a certain church, and residents choose themselves, whether to attend or not, whose business is it anyway? After all it is their home!
