Concerns have been raised after a vote that allows same-sex marriages to be performed in places of worship for the first time. Traditionalist bishops and peers fear that vicars could be taken to court and sued if they turn down requests to hold civil partnerships on religious premises. The amendment in the House of Lords, they fear, could be interpreted as discrimination.
It is feared that same-sex couples would be able to use the protection from discrimination guaranteed – under the Equality Bill or the Human Rights Act (an amendment to the Equality Bill)- to take legal action against individual clergy in their parish if they refuse to “marry” them in a local church. Best to fear God rather than man!
