New York 23- The Election That Won’t Stop Surprising

In the election for Congress from New York’s 23rd Congressional District, Democrat Bill Owens was sworn in to office last Friday and on Saturday, contradicting his own campaign promises, cast his vote in support of the Pelosi-Obama socialized healthcare package. The Problem is that Doug Hoffman’s concession, and the seating of the new Congressman by Pelosi, may have been based on faulty reporting from Osswego County, and other areas, and the race may not in fact go to Owens.

Glitches in voting machine and vote counts caused artificially low numbers to be reported for Doug Hoffman in Oswego County, a county that had been expected to break from Hoffman in large numbers. When the Hoffman campaign saw those numbers, the assumption was that if he had not done so well in Oswego County, that the election was lost.

The votes for Hoffman in Oswego County DID break for him in a big way, so much so that between re-canvassing, which has already uncovered problems in other areas, and the over 10,000 absentee ballots, which are expected to be strongly favor Hoffman, it would be premature to call this election one way or another. If these facts had been known beforehand there would not have been any concession by Hoffman, Owens would not have been sworn in, and it is possible that without his vote for the socialized healthcare package (in contradiction to his campaign promises and statements on his stance on this issue) the Pelosi-Obama Socialized Medicine Package may not have passed.
